Areen Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 GM guys can u create a chat box like in face book... we can chat wid our frnds here in forums if we are offline ingame.... just a suggestion. :th_swt3: ....
Aerofox Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 That'll be a LOT of web designing work, but certainly not impossible. plus it'll be kinda nice together with the statuses.+1
Rayray Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 (edited) Oh damn, you guys remind me of our clients at work, when they think a function such us this is easy to code. First of all, facebook chat is not really a chat function, it is more like an instant messenger(skype, yahoo messenger, msn). That is harder to code into a simple website. But I believe this forum is made with IP Board(says so in the lower right). And I think IP Board has a chat feature, but not like the one in facebook. The chat feature of IP Board is a chat room feature. Now, if that is the only one available on IP Board, we already have the shoutbox which practically does the same thing(everyone can talk and read what you type) so not needed. Although having private chat rooms might be nice, but it shouldn't be a priority. Best solution: Add them on skype. Edited June 19, 2014 by Rayray
ThePerfectHit Posted June 19, 2014 Report Posted June 19, 2014 Or we could try getting some real issues changed...
Areen Posted June 19, 2014 Author Report Posted June 19, 2014 (edited) I Suggested this becoz if i want to talk to my frnds personally regarding tokens/woe/equips/etc... chat box is the only one its not like u should make the chat box its just a suggestion becoz most of the people r working they cant use facebook in der companies like me.... and also if chat box is der in forums we dont need to contact our GM der in skype or msn we wil knw here itself are they online or not... m not saying to take it as your priority work, just you can add in your notes to make this chat box if u accept it.. Rayray Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 The GM team(i believe) do not have a dedicated web developer for them. If they decide to do this, they would have to hire one. Seeing as this site is done with PHP, they would need to hire a PHP developer. The cost of hiring one will depend on the developer's skill set. I will say it now, it is expensive to get one. Unless someone actually volunteers to do it, I don't see this happening. Now, for an alternative: I have a web application that I made like a year ago that sits around in my Github account. It is made using Ruby on Rails and not PHP and in no way can I integrate it into the forums. The web app is basically a clone of Twitter. If I have the spare time, I can use that web app as a basis for a twitter like messaging/social network site for this server. But, as I am volunteering on this, and I do not really have much spare time, please do not expect from it. Also, I will host it(either on Heroku as that is free but a bit slow, or AWS), I can't setup my own server and domain for it, so once I post the URL please save it into your bookmarks as the URL is not easy to remember(generated one by the hosting). If that is ok with you, then I'll check if I can update and start working on the app on the weekends. I will also change that app so that it could work even on iPhones/Android so that anyone can communicate using their phones. Sound fair enough? 1
Areen Posted June 20, 2014 Author Report Posted June 20, 2014 (edited) yes..!!! this sounds good.. and please take your time... Edited June 20, 2014 by Areen
Forum~ Posted June 20, 2014 Report Posted June 20, 2014 Best solution: Add them on skype. There are services already available for something like this. You're just being picky now. I mean if Rayray is volunteering his work, I guess it's fine. I've made a chat application on Java myself and it is hard work.
Rayray Posted June 21, 2014 Report Posted June 21, 2014 There are services already available for something like this. You're just being picky now. I mean if Rayray is volunteering his work, I guess it's fine. I've made a chat application on Java myself and it is hard work. It is indeed hard work, I can't even do it in Java because I suck so badly on it. I am volunteering on just because I did plan on doing it for sometime, I just didn't have enough motivation to do it. Would actually help me learn a few things while doing it. The old app I made is a basic twitter clone. You add people, follow people and their "tweets" will be shown on your feed. Now, what I would add in it is a basic messenger at the very least, because making a live chat will eat a lot of bandwidth and I don't want Heroku to charge me for it. Also, I would optimize so it could work on smartphones, which is a bit easier to do nowadays. Again this may take some time, and you guys are indeed better off using messengers like Skype for instance.
