Ragnarok is a manhwa created by Lee Myung-jin and distributed by Tokyopop in North America, and by Chuangyi in Singapore. There are currently 10 volumes in circulation, published in English in North America by TOKYOPOP from May 21, 2002 to April 6, 2004. The manhwa is also published in English in Singapore by Chuang Yi.

This manhwa became the basis of the widely popular Korean MMORPG, Ragnarok Online developed by Gravity Corp. Currently, the online game is divorced from the story of the manhwa. Ragnarok is on hiatus as Lee Myung-jin is working to help with story expansions to Ragnarok Online.

Ragnarok follows the life and adventures of the warrior Chaos, who is an amnesiac that cannot remember anything from before the last two years in his life. He resides in the city of Fayon, inhabited by a long lineage of warriors. The newest leader in line to claim the head position of the village is a young woman by the name of Iris Irine, who trains with her close friend Chaos to become a suitable leader for her people. Meanwhile, Fenris Fenrir searches for Balder's reincarnation to bring about Ragnarok

Characters

[edit] Protagonists

Chaos: A Rune Knight who has lost the memory of his childhood. Chaos came to live in Fayon, a village of great warriors, and became best friends with Iris Irine, the heir to leadership of the village. When Fenris Fenrir arrived in Fayon, Chaos learned that he was the reincarnation of Balder, the God of Light. With his memories starting to return and his powers growing with every battle, Chaos struggles to unravel his past and find his true destiny. Chaos appears to be a newer name than his original in this lifetime. In a flashback, he wears the name tag of "Vermillion," from a dragon knight who found him in a bloody area with slain soldiers and a young girl in his arms. Despite his troubled past, he is a relatively good-natured young man who is somewhat clueless about romantic relationships, particularly with Iris Irine. He also is a very loyal friend, including to the very reticent Loki.

Fenris Fenrir: The reincarnation of the Wolf God, Fenris has become a powerful warlock, and upon returning to life began searching the world for Balder, who had also been reborn as a mortal. Fenris wields many forgotten sorceries, as well as the magical demon-slaying staff Laevatein. Notably, she has the curious ability to copy any spell that strikes her. During her journey, she has come to care deeply for Chaos as well as her memory of Balder, and sees Iris Irine as both a friend and a rival for Chaos's affections. She is a dignified and intelligent woman, seen as a big sister by Iris Irine and as an enigma by Chaos.

Iris Irine: The heir to leadership of Fayon, village of warriors. Iris is a cleric in training and knows many healing spells. She uses Rune Cards (papers that are concealed with magic) inscribed with magical runes to debilitate the enemy and help her allies. Iris has been best friends with Chaos for years and cares about him a great deal (She even calls herself as Chaos' girlfriend sometimes). Though she considers herself dignified and lady-like, she's prone to throwing tantrums and acting childish when she's excited. She admires Fenris greatly and has a running rivalry with the thief Lidia. Currently, her greatest enemy is her half-sister the valkyrie Sara Irine. She wields the magic-destroying sword Chonryongdo, one of three legendary dragon blades. It should be noted that in the English version, there are multiple variations of the spelling of "Chonryongdo" (eg, Chernryongdo) though none reflect the actual Korean spelling, Hepburn Romanisation suggesting instead Cheongryongdo.

Loki: The most powerful member of the Assassins' Guild, Loki had never even been wounded twice in combat before encountering Chaos. When the Assassins Guild was almost totally destroyed by Skurai (who had framed the act on Chaos), Loki hunted Chaos down and attacked him. Chaos eventually managed to convince Loki that they were not enemies, and Loki has joined forces with Chaos to hunt down the true culprit. Loki is apparently totally devoid of emotions (though there is some debate on this topic) and has a hard time fathoming them in others. He wields "The Might" ("Cosmic Energy" in the English release), the most powerful form of magic in the world, and has been described as "the one who is human and not."

Lidia: A thief who travels with a two-tailed cat named Ses. Lidia fancies herself a treasure hunter like her father, and is searching the world over for magical artifacts. Her greatest wish is to find Alfheim, the hidden city of the elves, the one treasure (The treasure of Avariel in the original release) her father could never locate. Lidia started hanging out with Chaos and the gang in order to steal Iris's dagger, Chonryongdo, and later latches on to Loki. She is known as Lidia in the English release.

Reina (Name not stated in the original release): An elfish archer that Chaos and his friends have run into during their time in the city of Geffen. She appears to be the last of her kind and wishes to protect the secret of Alfhiem, the ancient city of the elves. She doesn’t like Lidia as she is trying to steal the treasures of Alfhiem but she puts aside her differences with her and Loki during their adventure in Alfhiem while battling a powerful assassin (Juliana Lucille) and wizard (The city Mayor). Since the manhwa has been halted it is unsure what will become of her after her, Lidia, and Loki’s adventure.

[edit] Antagonists

Sara Irine: One of the twelve Valkyries of Freya. She is first seen attempting to hunt down Fenris Fenrir, although the warlock escapes. She then devastates Fayon with an army of Giants. Sara is, in fact, the half-sister of Iris. For some horrible, unknown reason, Sara's (and Iris's) father killed Sara's mother and tried to kill Sara as well. Sara fled the village of Fayon and became consumed with a thirst for vengeance. She met and killed her father during the attack on Fayon, earning Iris's hatred. Curiously, she saves both Iris and Fenrir from the witch Bijou, though she dispassionately tells her half-sister that she will finish Iris the next time they meet. She wields the legendary Sword of Retribution, Haeryongdo.

Skurai, the Cursed Prosecutor (known as Sakray in the Korean and other versions): A mysterious man with a terrifying power. Skurai wields the demon sword Talatsu, a weapon that drains the blood of whoever it injures, and receives also the memories of that person (Talatsu also learns the fighting techniques of the person it sucks the blood out, as Skurai stated in volume 10). Some version listed the sword's name as Tartanos instead. Guided by the Beholders, Skurai arrived in Fayon while it was under attack by Sara Irine and slew all the non-combatant villagers, including Iris's mother. He then traveled to the Assassin's Guild and killed every assassin there, then framed Chaos for the entire event. He seeks the blood of Chaos, as he believes it can fully quench the thirst of Talatsu and free Skurai's soul from its bondage to the demon. Skurai's dark past hides a terrible tragedy: he was once an honorable knight and the selling of his soul to Talatsu was to allow him the power to save his lover, the princess Titania, who was killed however by another demon that was disguised as a prince.

Himmelmez: Another of the twelve Valkyries, Himmelmez is a powerful necromancer and her necromancy has surpassed lich levels. Her undead forces encountered Chaos and his band while searching for the magical crystal known as the Heart of Ymir. She has vast hordes of undead beasts at her disposal, and her cloak of darkness can transform into many different weapons, including axe-blades, drills, and even a giant cannon. Her main weapon is called the "Wand of Hela", which controls zombies and it also transforms into the "Goth Rapier", which imparts lethal poison. No antidote in the world can dispel the poison from her Goth Rapier and only the "Ring of Mimir" can purge its poison, which she possesses.

Bijou the Witch: A powerful witch with a deformed hand. She commonly uses glaciel spells against her opponents. She is killed by Sara. During her death it appears that her and Himmelmez have been friends for a long time. She may have begun altering her body to better help her friend.

Zenobia Sadi Freile: One of the twelve valkyries of Freya. She is a powerful sorceress of elfin descent. Little is known about her abilities.

[edit] Other characters

The Beholders: Huginn and Muninn, two mysterious individuals who are able to transform into crows. They are the eyes of Odin, Allfather of the Gods, and are acting to influence events in Midgard. They are the ones who directed Skurai to attack first the village of Fayon, and then the Assassins Guild. They also acted to save both Skurai and Sara Irine from the dragon Nidhogg that Chaos summoned during the battle (by accident, but mostly sure, due to his flashbacks). Their true motives are a mystery. However, Muninn seems to have a more sadistic side than the silent Huginn, who displays occasional compassion, such as when he kills a monster about to devour a child.

The Asgard Rangers: A wild band of strangely-dressed women who consider themselves to be the champions of truth and justice. However, they seem to simply attack targets at random, then declare their victims to be 'unrighteous,' justifying their own extreme actions. Their wild poses and wacky antics serve to hide their considerable fighting skills. They seem to be a parody of sentai groups like Sailor Moon and Power Rangers.

Lord and Lady Irine: The father and mother of Iris. They both die at the hands of Skurai and Sara Irine. Lady Irine seems to be the brains behind the operation but the Lord is not dumb, just easily blinded by love of his daughter. Lord Irine is also father to Sara, by another mother, who he later kills for unrevealed reasons. Lord Irine's dying request is for Iris not to hate her sister. Lady Irine is implied to have been killed by Skurai in an attempt to protect the children (Nuri and Seri).

Matthew and the Guards: The accomplished guards of Fayon are led by the massive, if not lovable, Matthew. His hair resembles a rooster's crest, leading Chaos to call him 'chicken head'. He has a blatant infatuation with Iris but never lets it get in the way of duty. The main weapon of the guards is a wall of lethal cannons. These valiant souls go down defending their home. Matthew is made into a zombie by Himmelmez in order to make a foe Chaos would not willingly fight.

Ses (Sessy) the Cat o' Two Tails: This cat can talk, though Lidia would prefer it couldn't. He (A 'She' in the English release) seems to be more reasonable and rational then her owner. According to the Official Player's Handbook found at the start of each volume after the first, she provides a 50% bonus on Pickpocketing Saves. While this is relatively illogical both in wording and use, Ses does seem to do all the work in most of Lidia's criminal escapades.

The Assassins Guild: This group of Arabic inspired warriors are dedicated to preserving the balance of power within the entire continent. This means favoring good OR evil as the balance shifts. The policy doesn't exactly make them friends with anyone. Most are slaughtered by Skurai. Taulin and a small band of others survive because they accompany Loki to battle Surt's minions. The survivors are eventually stationed at the Guild headquarters to rebuild and recover the heavy losses taken.

General Karl Johann Spiegal: Commander of the forces of Volsug, he is a competent and good natured man. He is forced to imprison Chaos and his companions but assures them that he trusts them and would support them as a witness. When the forces of Himmelmez attack the city, he takes Fenris and Iris to the fragment of the Heart of Ymir. He becomes critically wounded but is stabilized in time.

The White and Black Mages: These taciturn characters constantly show up in the background of any major crowd. They are mimics of their namesakes from the Final Fantasy RPG series. They appear to be a tribute to that popular series.

Angelina Kidman: This spunky young woman is the announcer for the Geffen magic tourney and the prime secretary (As said in the original release) of the Witch Guild. She has a lecherous co-host, Frontain Rod, who is more concerned with the breasts of female competitors.

Frontain Rod Kimacue: He is the co-host announcer of the Geffen magic tourney, by Angelina's side, and the account manager of the Gravity Research Union (As said in the original release). He is a rather perverted person, who keeps peeking on women's breasts with his binoculars. Although he seems to be only an old perverted man, he has a lot of knowledge about magic and fighting techniques. He regonizes every single move that Fenris uses and is being curious about who Fenris really is. Just like he stated in the original release; "I have no idea, that how I should be reacting to Fenris's techniques. She's a complete mystery, and I'd really like to know who she really is and where does she come from".

Gustav Kube the Magician: A novice magician who explains the city of Geffen to our heroes. His character model would later be used as the basis for Mage in Ragnarok Online.

Currently Ragnarok Online have + 25 millions of players.

In Norse mythology, Ragnarok or Ragnarök (Old Norse ragnarøkr, "Twilight of the Gods"[2]) is the final battle waged between the Æsir, led by Odin, and the various forces of the giants or Jötnar, including Loki, followed by the destruction of the world and its subsequent rebirth. Not only will most of the gods, giants and monsters involved perish in this apocalyptic conflagration, but almost everything in the universe will be torn asunder and destroyed.

In Viking warrior society, dying honorably in battle could earn a man a place in Valhalla with the gods, on whose side he would fight during Ragnarök as one of the einherjar. Dying of illness or old age was considered ignominious and earned a man an afterlife in Hel. In the Norse pantheon, the gods themselves were doomed to die in battle at Ragnarök. Exactly what will happen, who will fight whom, and the fates of the participants in this battle were well known to the Norse peoples from the Sagas and skaldic poetry. The Völuspá ("Prophecy of the Völva") — the first lay of the Poetic Edda and dating from about A.D. 1000 — spans the history of the old gods, from the beginning of time to Ragnarok, in 65 stanzas.[3] The Prose Edda, put in writing some two centuries later by Snorri Sturluson, describes in detail what takes place before, during, and after the battle.

What seems eschatologically unique about Ragnarök is that the gods already know through prophecy what is going to happen — when the event will occur, who will be slain by whom, and so forth. They even realize that they are powerless to prevent it but nevertheless bravely and defiantly face their bleak destiny. This is thought by some scholars to represent the ordered world (the Æsir) eventually succumbing to the unavoidable forces of chaos and entropy (the giants).[4]

Old Norse Ragnarök is a compound of ragna, the genitive plural of regin ("gods" or "ruling powers"), and rök "fate" (etymologically related to English "reach"). Ragnarök does not mean "Twilight of the Gods"; that phrase is the result of a famous mistranslation. "Ragnarökr" or "Ragnarøkr" means "doom of the powers" or "destruction of the powers" (where "powers" means "gods").

In Danish and Norwegian, ragnarok is also used as a synonym for chaos.[5]

[edit] Portents

Ragnarök will be preceded by the Fimbulvetr or "Monstrous Winter", a period of three years of perpetual winter with no summer between. Snow will fall from all directions with great frosts and biting wind, and the sun will lend no warmth to the earth. During this time great battles will be fought throughout the world, humanity will descend further into violence and depravity, laws of kinship will be broken, and fathers, sons and brothers will rise up against one another. According to Völuspá, it will be an "axe age, a sword age, shields are cleft asunder, a storm age, a wolf age, before the world plunges headlong."

The wolves Sköll and Hati will then finally devour Sól (the Sun) and her brother Máni (the Moon) respectively after a perpetual chase, and the stars will burn out and vanish from the sky, plunging the earth into darkness.[6]

At that point Garmr, the monstrous hound that is bound at the cave of Gnipahellir, will begin to bay loudly. In response, three cockerels will begin crowing: Fjalar in Jotunheim from the forest of Gallows-wood, Gullinkambi in Valhalla who will wake the einherjar, and a third one that is not named, crowing in Hel and waking the dead.[7] The giant Hraesvelgr will sit on the edge of the heavens in eagle form and shriek with anticipation.

The earth will begin to tremble so violently that trees will be uprooted and mountains will fall, and all bonds and fetters will snap and break. Loki, god of mischief and strife, will be freed along with his ferocious son, the wolf Fenrir whose slavering mouth will gape wide open with his upper jaw against the sky and his lower one against the earth, but it would gape even wider if there was room. Flames will burn from the wolf's eyes and leap from his nostrils. Likewise, Garmr's "rope will break and the ravener run free". Meanwhile, Eggthér, a herdsman among the giants, will sit on a mound and joyfully play his harp in grim celebration of the coming holocaust.

Faroese stamp depicting the beginning of RagnarökAt the same time, the oceans will surge up, drowning the land in a great flood as Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent, twisting and writhing in fury, makes his way onto the shore. He will proceed alongside his brother Fenrir, spewing venom and spattering the sky and earth with his poison.

Then it will happen that in the upsurge of waters, the great ship Naglfar, the ship of the giants (which is made from the nails of the dead), will be released from its moorings in Jotunheim. Set free by the catastrophic flooding and tsunamis caused by the Serpent, it will be carried along from the east, captained by the giant Hrym and transporting the legions of Jotnar toward the battlefield of Vigrid (Óskópnir).

From the north will sail Loki in a ship carrying a great army of evil people called "Heljar sinnar" (according to Gylfaginning which is not to be confused with people from Hel) to fight against the einherjar.[citation needed]

Amid this turmoil, the sky will open and from it will ride the fire giants of Muspelheim (the "sons of Muspell"), led by Surtr who brandishes a flaming sword ("burning with the sun of the war gods" according to Völuspá). They will advance from the south with fire before and behind them, tearing the sky apart as they too close in on Vigrid. As Surtr and the others ride over Bifröst, the rainbow bridge will break behind them and fall to the earth, while the mountains themselves crack open, releasing hordes of troll-wives upon the land.

All the forces of the Jotnar will thus arrive on three fronts to storm Asgard and will gather in battle formation upon Vigrid. They will all but fill that plain that stretches one hundred leagues in every direction

[edit] Final battle

Tyr chaining Fenrir.Heimdall, being the first of the gods to see the enemies approaching, will blow mightily on Gjallarhorn, sounding such a blast that it will be heard throughout all worlds. All the gods will awaken and at once meet in council. Odin will then mount his horse Sleipnir, ride to the well of Mímir and consult him for guidance on his own and his people's behalf.[8]

Yggdrasil, the World Tree, will groan and shudder, shaking from root to limb, and nothing will then be unafraid on earth or in the heavens or in Hel. The dwarves, those "princes of the mountain wall", [9] will lament before their doorways of stone. All the Æsir and einherjar will put on their war gear and advance onto the field to meet the giants. Odin will ride in front of the vast host [10] wearing a golden helmet, a shining coat of mail and brandishing his spear Gungnir.

Odin will make straight for Fenrir, and Thor, right beside him, will be unable to help because his old enemy Jörmungandr, the Midgard Serpent, will at once attack him. Freyr, the "bright slayer of Beli", [11] will fight the fire giant Surtr, but after a harsh conflict he will become the first of all the gods to fall as he has previously given his own good sword to his servant Skírnir. Tyr will battle Garmr and each will slay the other.

Thor, "the glorious son of Earth", [12] will kill Jörmungandr with his hammer Mjolnir. "In his wrath the defender of Midgard strikes" [13] but will himself stagger back nine steps before falling to the ground dead from the poison which the Serpent unleashed upon him. Then the "second sorrow of Frigg" [14] will come about when Odin fights valiantly against Fenrir but is swallowed by the wolf. However, Odin's son Vidar will immediately advance against the "beast of slaughter" [15] and step with one foot on the wolf's lower jaw. On this foot he will be wearing the heavy shoe which he has been making since the beginning of time, consisting of all the leather waste pieces which men pare off at the toes and heels of their own shoes. With one hand he will grasp the wolf's upper jaw and tear his mouth apart, killing him at last and avenging his father. [16]

Finally, Heimdall will fight Loki but neither will survive the evenly matched encounter. With that, Surtr will raise his hand and unleash his flame over the earth and burn the entire world. The conflagration will leap high against the heavens, and Surtr himself will be consumed by his own fiery destruction along with the other giants and most other gods and beings in the process. The land will sink completely into the sea.

[edit] Aftermath and rebirth

After a time when the fire of Surtr has died down and the smoke and steam are dispersed, a new earth will rise up from the sea. It will be green and fair, and crops and fields will grow on their own, without sowing. All ills will be healed. "A waterfall plunges, an eagle soars over it, hunting fish on the mountain." [17] A daughter born to the sun goddess will continue her mother's solar journey across the sky.[18] In a place called Hoddmimir's Forest a man and woman named Lif and Lifthrasir will have survived, finding refuge from the fire and nourishing themselves with morning dew. Together they will become the progenitors of a new race of humans and the world will be inhabited once again.[19]

Faroese stamp depicting the return of Baldur and HodurA few of the gods will also have survived the ordeal including Odin's sons Vidar and Váli, not having been harmed by the flames or the deluge, and they will dwell "in the temples of the gods" [20] on the field of Idavoll where Asgard, now destroyed, had previously been. Thor's sons Magni and Modi, the inheritors of their father's hammer, will then arrive, bringing Mjolnir. Baldr and his brother Höd (who both died prior to Ragnarök) will be reborn, fully reconciled, and ascend from Hel to dwell in the former halls of their father Odin in the heavens. Hoenir will also be there and will "choose wooden slips for prophecy." [21] The new generation of mortals will then worship this new pantheon of gods, led by Baldr, the legitimate heir of Odin.

Meeting at Idavoll, these gods will sit down together, discuss their mysteries and hidden lore, and speak of the things that had happened in former times, of the Midgard Serpent and Fenriswolf, and of "the ancient runes of Fimbultyr." [22] Then they will find in the green grass the golden playing pieces that had belonged to the Æsir when the universe was young. They will behold these objects in wonder, tangible reminders of a first golden age of peace at the dawn of time.

There will still be many halls and mansions to house the souls of the dead, both of the righteous and the wicked. The best place to be in the heavens will be the hall of Gimlé, brighter than the sun with a roof of gold. "There the noble lords will live and spend their days in pleasure." [23] There is also the hall of Brimir where there will be plenty of good drink for those who take pleasure in it [24] and is located on the plain of Okolnir ("Never Cold"). [25] That is also a good hall called Sindri, built of red gold and located on Nidafjoll ("Dark Mountains"). [26] In these halls shall dwell good and virtuous people. There are also two other heavenly realms located above Asgard known as Andlang and Vidblain. These places will offer protection while Surtr's fire burns the world.[27]

The fate of the wicked is not so pleasant. In Hel is located a hall of punishment in a region called Náströnd ("Corpse Shore"). The hall itself is not named in the Eddic sources but is large and woven from serpents like a wattled house. The heads of these snakes all face inward and spit venom so that rivers of poison flow along the hall, and floundering in these caustic streams are the souls of murderers, oathbreakers and seducers. The dragon Nidhogg will torment the bodies of the dead, and a wolf will tear at their corpses.
