Annie Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Portability is not an option with an alienware laptop, trust me. These days laptops aren't meant to be portable. =_= M11X is really a portable and a 2nd version is coming out with i3, i5, i7 processor, coming out in 2010 in June so you might wanna check it out do some research I'm planning on getting that laptop for summer, traveling with laptop is a must for me. =] ppssst, why are you replying to farewell topic from gen? oO

Xtopher Posted May 29, 2010 Author Report Posted May 29, 2010 Well, I need it to be more mobile than a desktop but not necessarily portable...
Sensation Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 Buy a desktop and a netbook (8-12 inch 'laptops'), those things are enough for school work & meetings, battery life goes up till 12 hours, it's weight is less than your pencil case and it has almost all functionalities of a laptop. Pro's, you're portable with your netbook and you have a decked out gaming desktop. No distractions when you're at school (gaming at school ain't good you know) and top gaming performance where you are at home.
Levis Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 This sounds interesting... Haven't thought about it really. But isn't it expensive? I mean in euro netbooks cost like 300-400 Euro + Desktop like 500-1000 Euro I've seen so far.
Sensation Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 And you'll get everything you want in return, spending around 1000-1500 on a decent package is a good investment if you plan to use it a lot. It's all about what you want, a laptop can never compare to a decked out desktop when it comes to performance and a laptop isn't as portable, hasn't this huge battery life as a netbook either. Choosing a laptop would be taking the easy way out with just putting yourself at a disadvantage.
Levis Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) What do you think about buying one of these Laptops/Noteboks + a normal Full HD Screen with a HDMI access? I imagine that those Screens cost around 200-300 Euro, you can even use it to watch TV and connect with your Laptop. But actually I don't know if there are some where you can connect your Keyboard and Mouse. I just know, that they have USB access, so it might be possible aslong there are enough USB access points.. I just don't know how much fun it would be to game on a 11'' screen... Also: no disk drive.
Forum~ Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Just saying lol, My friend recently bought the ~$900 Alienware. Then, he upgraded the ram and HDD by himself. I think through this way, it was a lot cheaper...
Rayray Posted June 2, 2010 Report Posted June 2, 2010 Well what sensation said is good though, there are a lot of laptops nowadays that are actually the same size of a netbook(but not suffering from lack of speed as some netbook does, but not as fast as something with at least a dual core). Buying a gaming desktop is indeed a lot cheaper, but it is still your call
Sensation Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 Laptops can't match an equally pricey desktop + HD widescreen monitor (LED or LCD) when it comes to performance, they can't either match netbooks in portability, weight, battery life and all the comforts you see in using it for mobile purposes. Having 2 different computers can be a bit 'troublesome', but you'll keep gaming and fun on one computer and school and other serious stuff on a portable and lightweight external HDD that matches your netbook. Staying organized like that will only benefit the things you do and might even save your wallet some burden, as desktops are easier (and cheaper) to upgrade, which means you won't have to buy a new one as early (saving money on the long term too). Anyway, that's my input and vision on this concept. Hopefully you'll take this into consideration, I've been a former IT student and that combination was a lot used among the others.
Supreme Posted June 5, 2010 Report Posted June 5, 2010 I really agree with what Sensation said. He pretty much explained everything and plus, less load on the computer compared to just buying one.
MxDancer Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 I would suggest the Alienware M11x, if you dont care about the screen szie !!! And also the Toshiba one that you post on there, which it has bigger screen size. However, Thoshiba will be pricey if compare to the M11x. Me personally is thinking getting a new laptop too, because the one I'm using right now the graphic card SUCKS !!!

But, the thing with me is if I was going to buy a piece of stationary equipment it wouldn't be a desktop... Seeing how I don't have any game consoles I would buy an Xbox/PS3 and a nice large TV to play them on before I bought a desktop. The laptop option appeals to me because it is far less troublesome to move it around and has more capabilities than a console. Even the least portable laptop is more portable & convenient than a desktop/console.

If you, after all this debating and advise, still want to have a laptop both for performance (gaming, possibly photo & video editing) and school work, I'd say go for the Toshiba. 15.3 Inch isn't a lot, even if it's super cool LED technology, more screen is always needed, especially when you're gaming, it's easier on the eyes (health), you have a bigger Field of View in most games (beneficial) and is a lot cooler to do presentations on or watch some cool movies with. Overall specs are competing with the Alienware, has some different pros & cons, but still one of the better choices. P.S. Dell & Alienware are the same company, just a branch of Dell that is 'specialized' in gaming. Edit: Try to get a nice SSD for your operating system, you'll love it and kick up the RAM up to 8Gb, 64-bit goes so much more smooth from that point on. Hope that helps you out.
Soop Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 (edited) eh my coworker has that alienware and it looks cool but compared to my lappy its a beast as far as size. on a side note another coworker of mine brings his desktop comp which is like super small and he plays games on it but its not got the portability of a laptop. Anyways my 2 cents is never get a dell. i have one and it has literally been nothin but problems from day one. I have to tape my power cord to my comp to keep it plugged in, the battery doesnt charge for some reason so if my cord gets unplugged it lights out, then it takes years to reboot, my keyboard and mouse buttons jam, and i cant get it fixed even tho its still on warranty cause they told me there isnt ENOUGH wrong with it to spend the WEEK to repair.... LIKE WTH!!!!!and when i looked around online there were alot of forums about how all dell comps have the battery issues now and nobody knows why. about the alienware.... it does look sick man except for the super colorful rainbow color lights under the keyboard, and the guy said it works great for games, but all i saw him play was WOW and im not into that crap >.> and i havent heard about alienware having the problem with batteries its just the dell comps.... same thing but somehow different :/ Edited July 9, 2010 by Soop
