Let me just reinterate that this topic was not started so people could bicker over whether or not it's right to use certain words. There's a bigger issue here whether or not some people can see that. Regardless of what anyone says, there is no such thing as "Freedom of Speech" on private servers... not how it was intended in the Bill of Rights, anyway. When it comes down to the pin point issue, if you somehow "crossed the line" and Genesis or Zeitgeist banned you, that would be it. You couldn't throw out the "Freedom of Speech" ticket. You wouldn't be repremanded. You'd be banned. And that's how it would stay. Why? Because when you join a server you give your GUARANTEE that you'll comply with the Terms of Service ( which includes "based on their judgement" ). Even so, if you violate a rule that isn't listed... you can still be banned. Why? Because this server BELONGS to a human being that has their OWN ideas and morals. And who is anyone to say what Genesis can and can't do with THIS server? And before Genesis says "No, this server is community run". No it's not. Sure, we're a democracy and people are allowed to have their opinions taken into consideration.. but when it comes right down to that fine line, Genesis is the final say. Word it however you want, but that's what it comes down to. Right to the T. REGARDLESS - the point of the rule was to discuss the RULE AT HAND, not your need to call eachother "nigger" even though the term has been deemed offensive for ages. If you WERE to take a poll, most of the server wouldn't vote. Why? Because a lot of members play without bothering with the forums. Making a forum poll completely moot. And even if you did take a poll, it's not the majority we're considering here. The majority doesn't care what is said to them, or what people talk about and could care less about who is harmed and who isn't. Parents and younger, influencable children do. Then again, when it comes to caring about others, I wouldn't expect Damascus or anyone on the internet with that attitude to step up and be a big boy about it. And Ryoji, adding a claus to the TOS that STATES there may be content that is not suitable for children is not that hard to do. It has been done on many servers. Btw, the server that Genesis is pretty jealous of has several rules stating what is acceptable and what isn't. This includes racial slurs, sexual content AND anything that is offensive to other players. Keep in mind this server has 1600+ players, has been THRIVING for years and is doing completely fine. Said server's exact rule regarding offensive language: A player may not at any point in time use language offensive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable. Nor can each player relate conversation to any mention of drugs, sex, alcohol, or criminal activity. There is NO argument when it comes to rules. I hope to god Genesis sees this part. What he says goes, you don't like it? Play another server. Play EcchiRO. Run around naked with pedophiles all day. Maybe that's where you belong if you can't have an ounce of compassion for your younger generation. I already said if one were to be put in, it should have a disable and enable feature. That doesn't work for you? If it would mean younger players could play without being influenced by certain things, then why not? And if you're following the rules, the chat filter probably wouldn't affect you anyway, eh? But eh.. we already know you don't. So anyways. Icon, I do agree with you. I think a lot of the GMs are young... and their priorities are a little whacked, but hey? What can we do?

I'm not saying that there needs to be a complete list of EXACTLY what is and is not okay. A bit of guideline would help. And I'm not only saying this for members, but for GMs too. Not all GMs and Mods are 100% on what is okay and what isn't. And if they don't completely understand the rules, how can we? And how can they be expected to uphold them?

If it has an option to turn it on / off I'm all for it. It'd be nice for it to come enabled, and then have a command or NPC that can disable it for those who don't really care.

And when it comes to racial slurs used "humorously", someone, somewhere on the server is going to be offended by it. Period. That's why I don't think it should be allowed. The discussion was started to discuss the RULE, mainly. There's no clarification when it comes to it. I don't believe that racists comments should be allowed. I don't think we should have a chat filter. I DO think that the GMs should have some kind of guideline of what is appropriate and what isn't. What is punishable and what isn't. And I think users should be aware of those specifications so that there is a clear line of what is okay and what isn't. Simply saying "If someone offends you, report them" but why waste time reporting someone that says something that offends you if the GM that is dealing with the case doesn't find it offensive? Example: Someone in game says "I like titties" ( go along with me for the sake of argument, I wouldn't be offended by this ) and I report them. Zeit picks up the issue and reads what happens. Zeit is of course sitting there thinking "YAME2BUDDY!" while I'm sitting at my computer, offended. Nothing happens to said offender and I'm continuously offended by his love of titties. ;[ What is offensive to one person may not be offensive to another, that's what I'm saying.

Asking someone to "cut it out" is about as effective as asking something for 50 donation coupons for free. People don't respect anything but authority, period. I've asked people to stop nicely before. Nope. It only works when you add "or I'll report you" at the end.
