You can't always rely on bows. I mean woah, True Sight and Improve Concentration can make a good short-ranged sniper.

DEF wont work almost every time you duel with players. They are surely using a Bloodlust weapon w/c ignores target's DEF. I suggest you turn him into a battle, tank paladin, not just a tank.
