Jer Flip Posted September 17, 2008 Report Posted September 17, 2008 What are your favorite metal subgenres? (Some of them are fusion genres or aren't directly related to metal, such as grindcore and Deathcore.) Avant-garde metal Black metal Death metal Deathcore Doom metal Glam metal Gothic metal Groove metal Power metal Progressive metal Speed metal Stoner metal Symphonic metal Thrash metal Traditional heavy metal Viking metal Alternative metal Christian metal Crust punk Drone metal Folk metal Funk metal Grindcore Grunge Industrial metal Metalcore Neo-classical metal Nu metal Post-metal Rap metal Sludge metal Other/Experimental
Terminus Posted September 18, 2008 Report Posted September 18, 2008 I can't really say a specific favourite because it varies between mood and time. If I were to pick my top ten (in no specific order), I'd say: Thrash Death Groove Traditional Nu Black Alt Stoner Other/Experimental Grindcore
Jer Flip Posted September 18, 2008 Author Report Posted September 18, 2008 My favorites are: Death metal Deathcore Progressive metal Metalcore Grindcore Other/Experimental
Jer Flip Posted September 19, 2008 Author Report Posted September 19, 2008 Nintendo-core. Win. Sorry, but that is in no way a metal subgenre.
Terminus Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 It is if it's on the Wii. Anyways, I doubt you'd find many metalheads here. There are only those who listen to crap, pop and rock.
Fluxy Posted September 20, 2008 Report Posted September 20, 2008 You even know what Nintendo-core is boyyy? Pfft. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=21049504 http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...endid=115122686
Jer Flip Posted September 20, 2008 Author Report Posted September 20, 2008 I'm afraid "Nintendocore" is a subgenre of hardcore, not metal. There is a difference.
Fluxy Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 I'm afraid "Nintendocore" is a subgenre of hardcore, not metal. There is a difference. And hardcore is a subgenre of Metal. Your point?
Jer Flip Posted September 21, 2008 Author Report Posted September 21, 2008 And hardcore is a subgenre of Metal. Your point? Actually, hardcore is a subgenre of punk rock and has no affiliation whatsoever with metal.
Fluxy Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 All genre's of music we're derived at one stage from the same source =) Also, hardcore affiliates with Metalcore *duh*
Terminus Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 If I remember correctly, punk rock has influenced and is someway connected with metal.
Jer Flip Posted September 22, 2008 Author Report Posted September 22, 2008 All genre's of music we're derived at one stage from the same source =) Also, hardcore affiliates with Metalcore *duh* Metalcore = hybrid of hardcore and metal, so it can fall under metal. Hardcore, however, doesn't. If I remember correctly, punk rock has influenced and is someway connected with metal. You don't remember correctly.
Terminus Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 You don't remember correctly. I think I watched a video about Metallica and how they said themselves that Punk Rock has influenced them. I also watched a documentary about metal saying how it influenced and somehow helped "create" metal. I believe it was "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" or something like that.

Metal's roots = blues and rock, though.
Fluxy Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Okay. Metal's roots = blues and rock, though. As is hardcores roots.
Jer Flip Posted September 23, 2008 Author Report Posted September 23, 2008 As is hardcores roots. Hardcore comes from punk, which came from rock. Does that make it a subgenre of metal? Is jazz a subgenre of rock? The answer to both of those questions is "no".
