Devotion Posted January 7, 2010 Report Posted January 7, 2010 Drinking water upside down always works for me. A hiccup is just trapped air, so when I take a sip and swallow it upside down, I can actually feel that air bubble up my throat and then my hiccups are gone. You don't need a large gulp of liquid, and if it helps, pinch your nose. I believe the record for hiccups is 63 years. You got it good compared to that ;)
gtx0032 Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 well not swallowing/breathing for a few seconds do work for me. i remember the last hiccup i had when i was drinking with a few buddies. i was drunk in a few minutes because the hiccups always made me breathe the alcohol back!!! it was a disaster! thats when i developed the not swallowing/breathing technique. :) and yeah hiccups are annoying!
» Pat Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 A hiccup is just trapped air, so when I take a sip and swallow it upside down, I can actually feel that air bubble up my throat That's absolute nonsense. Hiccups are contractions of your thoracic diaphragm. Nothing more. Lol..
Apo Posted January 8, 2010 Report Posted January 8, 2010 hiccups are for the weak. No wonder you always have Hccups

Nyanko Posted January 9, 2010 Author Report Posted January 9, 2010 At least they aren't as contagious as yawns. Good point.
Devotion Posted January 9, 2010 Report Posted January 9, 2010 That's absolute nonsense. Hiccups are contractions of your thoracic diaphragm. Nothing more. Lol.. Caused by trapped air in your stomach. Stop exploiting every insignificant opportunity you think you have to show attitude towards me.
ifritakowaldi Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 hiccups is dangerous too u know. =) i drink water when i have hiccups.. but never "upside down". lol
» Pat Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Caused by trapped air in your stomach. Stop exploiting every insignificant opportunity you think you have to show attitude towards me. If you feel that way, then... well idc. I'm not trying to show any attitude towards you. I simply corrected you because what you said was just plainly wrong and still is. Hiccups are spasms/contractions of your diaphragm and they're in no way caused by trapped air in your stomache.
Wish Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup. It's an issue with the diaphragm when you end up taking air in weirdly, thereby trapping the air. So, you're both right. Ok?
Ethereal Posted January 10, 2010 Report Posted January 10, 2010 Caused by trapped air in your stomach. Stop exploiting every insignificant opportunity you think you have to show attitude towards me. No offense or anything, but I don't think there's any problem in trying to state someone's opinion against yours. Pat has all the rights to state what he thinks is right; I'm pretty sure he didn't mean it to make you feel offended or to show hatred towards you. Anyways I was just googling up hiccups, here's what I found: http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&defl...mp;ved=0CAkQkAE http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hiccup I don't think that mentions anything about trapped air. That's just my two cents, but whatever.
