Devotion Posted September 21, 2009 Report Posted September 21, 2009 (edited) Around noon today, my mom told me the neighbors found an injured squirrel on their property, and knowing how I am with animals they asked me to come look at it. It was lying on the ground unable to move. I picked it up with gloves and put it in a box. He would occasionally try to lift his head and he moved all his limbs, so I'm guessing he either had spinal or cranial trauma, in which case I knew he wouldn't last. But I was hoping he was just stunned. He drank when I offered so maybe he could survive. I tried contacting I don't know how many vet clinics, animal hospitals and wildlife sanctuaries in my area. And of course, being Sunday, most were closed and the others don't take rodents like squirrels. I couldn't even find a place that would euthanize him. Went apple picking and when I came back he was dead. Story of my life, I've always tried caring for injured animals and they usually don't survive. Anyways...if you ever find an injured wild animal, always protect yourself first, wear gloves, but try to offer them a dark quiet place where they can at least expire in peace. And lastly, spare a thought for the squirrel. They're rodents, nasty, vermin, can carry disease and parasites right? Sure but they're also living beings worthy of compassion. RIP squirrel. Yuki Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 Did you ever give it a name? Or is it just called "Squirrel." And sucks to hear, I would hate something like that happen to me.
Annie Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 Poor squirrel =[. I love animals myself, i have 2 dogs a cat and 6 hamsters... i started with 2 hamsters ^__^.
Chezuu Posted September 22, 2009 Report Posted September 22, 2009 When I was younger I found a crow with a broken wing in the graveyard and took it home. He was perfectly healthy, albeit unable to fly, and sadly I couldn't keep him and nurse him back to health because we have dogs and he'd get eaten/played with. So, we called our local vets, they looked him over, then said that unless they could find a shelter, they'd put him down. We left him at the vets and I have a horrible feeling they killed a perfectly healthy crow >:c It makes me sad thinking about it. Also my dogs eat baby squirrels. We don't encourage them they just ... do. :/ Anything that moves is delicious and tasty to them.
Devotion Posted September 22, 2009 Author Report Posted September 22, 2009 I never named him, I only had him for a few hours, so I guess it's just squirrel :< But that's ok because that way he represents all the other squirrels. About that crow, I wish wish wish I'd have been there to take him. If all he had was a broken wing the vet could have set it and let him heal. I really hope they didn't euthanize a perfectly good animal. And I love animals too! I started off with...*trying to remember* cats and turtles I think. Then bunnies and then a guinea pig. Had a parakeet who died of a virus, now I have a budgie. Had a collie who got hit by a car, a mutt who we had to put up for adoption, and now i have two dogs. Had a ball python who died of worms, now I have a milk snake. And I've got a hedgehog. This list doesn't account for the wild snakes, baby birds, mice etc I kept. But needless to say that when I move to the country It'll be a small zoo in my house :3 Gotta add some horses to it also.
Ipwnyourmom Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Is this a true story? I just ran over a squirrel the other day...
Apo Posted September 24, 2009 Report Posted September 24, 2009 Had something similiar happening. My neighboor put traps on the floor to caugh birds eating his falling pears, one day I was hearing a loud noise, similiar to a bird one so I went outside and saw a bird trapped, so I acted quick and jumped the fence and opened the trap and he flew away, no clues how far he went with a broken legs but at least I gave him back his freedom.
