Verbal Abuse Guidelines

Recommended Posts

Posted

Apparently it has now become against the rules to talk to someone else about someone, in a very mild way.

-------

Example:

*Killed a player*

*Player is laying there*

Me: Hey Bro, this persons a noob

Bro: Yeah total noob

-------

Player is upset that he/she cant kill me, so she posts a ticket claiming verbal abuse.

In my opinion, i wasn't even talking to that player, so i couldn't have been verbally abusing them. We need guidelines.

If I stood next to Genesis, while also being next to Dragon, and said

"I think Dragon is a noob.", but I was talking to Genesis, then Dragon

has every right to report me. It's an open insult directed at Dragon and

it doesn't matter that I wasn't talking to him.

I agree with you that 'noob' is a very mild insult that wouldn't and doesn't

hurt my feelings but we're not all the same age and/or maturity

level so some people will be offended by it.

As far as new guidelines go, we kind of hoped that 'offensive language'

covered that. Noob, being very mild in my opinion and yours, is still

offensive to some people.

The best way to avoid it is talking through PM's, that is if you feel that

you must talk about people.

(left open for suggestions on how to improve the rules/guidelines)

perhaps adding a warning for words of lesser offense or at

least a lesser punishment ... just jail or just mute no ban

but if you've been warned/jailed/banned before for verbal

abuse then you won't get the warning, sound good?

Well thats just it. I think it should be reserved for racial/sexist comments. Because those are totally irrelevant to the game. And those hurt feelings.

Because "noob" doesn't hurt anyone's feelings, they are just finding a way to get back at me for killing them in PVP.

You can get punished for indirectly "insulting" other people? What if you're sitting in town talking to your friend about somebody you don't like, and one of their friends are around and screen shots what's going on?

Verbal abuse goes way beyond sexist and racial slurs. Simply calling a kid fat several times and insisting on how fat he is might hurt him. People have varying degrees of tolerance. Verbal abuse reports are rarely 'iffy.' We can clearly tell if someone meant to insult a player or not, most of the time. If you kill someone who can't kill you and you stand there calling him a noob, you're baiting him into a reaction. That is verbal abuse as well as harassement. Although most players taunt each other, there is little to no reason for it, and shouldn't be started to begin with; because it is NOT necessary.

There is no way to be crystal clear about a rule like this. There are thousands of words one could use to insult and torment. Listing them all is not possible for us, so it's easier to just outlaw them all as a whole.

in my opinion this should be looked upon.

when someone kills a person that person tends to get a huge ego boost and to rub it in the other players face and to avoid the rules they'll give 'mild' insults such as 'noob' or 'you suck'. this isn't friendly behavior. we all play the same server together and you're going to see 90% of the people who play here no matter what, calling people things just because you killed them shouldn't be allowed. it's immature. think of how newer players are going to feel, too, it doesn't show the server as being friendly. lol really so you killed someone MUST YOU CALL THAT PERSON A NOOB WHETHER YOU SPECIFICALLY SAY IT AT THAT PERSON OR NOT? NO. same goes for the other way around, if someone calls a person who killed them noob then that person should be punished.

you should just be jailed. straight up.

Wow, if someone reported me for everytime I said something bad ROFL....

Good point, and we're aware that 95% of verbal abuse is never reported, if not more. So when we do get a report we take it seriously. And we urge anyone who feels they've been verbally abused to report it, even if it takes a few minutes to upload screenshots.

What if there's someone that's very intolerable to insults and constantly reports everybody that insults them?

If a friend shows me a screenshot of someone insulting me, I may or may not report it. Just because someone's not around to hear it doesn't mean it loses it's meaning.

So a tree does make a sound. Thanks, Char.

I wasn't even talking about my question, nor was I being sarcastic. I just turned my attention to the common question of : "If a tree falls and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" I got my answer from your post lol.

It does make a sound, but not a noise~! La~! ;o

Besides, it can go both ways...At least for this one!

Someone could have a huge ego and call someone a name in the heat of the moment.

...Or they're just a jerk.

Someone who just died could also make insults back to them, saying they had lag/ganged/etc.

...Meaning they're butt hurt people.

Either way is punishable.

But at the same time, it's up to the GM's discression to whether or not it's flaming/verbal abuse.

While telling someone they F*cking Suck compared to noob, the feeling can be the same.

Yet, the GMs can usually tell when you're faking the abuse.

Like reporting someone you dislike on purpose because they said "You're tall" or something immature.

Also, chances are if you're upset at the one who reported you. They report everyone.

So why bother getting a QQ boost, when you're nothing special? ):

If any modifications be done to this, I think GMs should make stricter recordings on punishments...

That way the same offenders aren't getting the same minimum punishment because a different GM caught them.

Meaning, repeat offenders would REALLY not want to keep breaking the rules...

Potentially lowering the rate of offenses committed,

at the same time keeping the really big offenders banned because they were recorded and punished properly.

That would require a thread for GM's that would list all the names of offenders. Once a GM punishes someone for verbal abuse they have to either add the name with one strike (number 1 next to it) or increase the current strike. Doable but might get complicated.

If you don't do this already, what's the point of even listing first, second, and third offense punishments in the rules?

You were a GM. You would know what's in the GM thread. And to date we don't have a thread specifically for a list of offenders and the number of warnings they received. We have to rely on the punishment logs, which is pages long, and which most of us don't go through every time someone abuses. If we notice a repeat offender we mention is to each other.

Exactly. <3

Because I know I was as guilty as the next GM for not individually checking each page on there for one offender..

e.e;

Not with as many pages are on there. My Lord.

lol, but that's okay and nona my business. =)

It's just a suggestion.
