You are really good for "just trying it out".

Keep it up. C:

Is this acrylic?

Yeah, I think so. Oil would be shiny and stuff on that canvas. Iunno, I only used oil and acrylic before.

Thanks for the advice... though I'm not really concerned with the elements or principles of design... I just like creating art for it's purpose of being useless and admirable.

It's not admirable if it's ugly or looks like you have no recognition of your subject matter. If you want to do self portraits, paint what you see, not what you think you see.

All art is designed using the "elements and principles of design." That's what makes it visually appealing. Now, if you like visually unappealing things, that's cool too. Whatev, bruv. Just future advice from one artist to another(?).

No, It's not :/ By a philosophical definition, art can be anything as long is can be proven as art. What the required elements for art varies from person to person, but art isn't always designed using the "elements and principles of design." Maybe when you're in class learning the techniques of art, in which case, of course there is a prescribed way of doing things. The idea of art is in constant motion and is expanding rapidly to accommodate unorthodox works.

For instance, Martin Creed won the Turner Prize in 2001 for his piece, "The Light Going On And Off." And all he did was turn lights on and off. He's also the one who crumpled a piece of A4 paper and called it art. It's what he said about it that made it art. So now that he's gained such artistic heights, he can do whatever he wants (artistically), including ignore the "elements and principles of design."

also, one should never use the word "all" when it comes to art. Many of us do it, but it's wrong. Art is never always one thing or another, and it actually doesn't have a clear definition.

and for Cale, I really love the jacket in the first one, and how the shirt in the second painting melts in with the background.

and that is retarded. pure rubbish. art is a form of self expression. crumpling up a piece of paper is almost poking fun of art that people put their feelings and heart into.

Art doesn't have rules. If I wanted to create something mirror reflecting I would have. I made them exactly how I intended... obviously.

Error, Art is not same as Design...you can design using "elements and principles of design" ... but not works for art.

arts is subjective dont have rulz and is not esthetic.

Art is whatever you, the creator, want it to be. End of discussion on "what is art?'

I'm gonna slaughter nine babies. That's art!

If that is what you consider art, then so be it. Don't expect your form of art to be accepted by the "art community" though. :D
