    I've seen the Kraken card's skill combo being used by novices and such, so that one works-- and the one that gives +2 strength also works. I've tested the one that gives chance to cause Crystallize status to enemy by chance (like Bathory monster does to hold you in place I think?), and it doesn't work, as I think that's a Renewal feature.

    This happens to me a lot when I first start the game up, usually if you alt+tab and back it fixes it. If you're on Windows 8/10, try setting the game, patcher, and setup exe's to run as administrator, and make sure your firewall or any antivirus software you might be running aren't blocking the game in any way. :)
